About Diyarbakir

Diyarbakır is the largest city of Turkey's Southeastern Anatolian Region, with 1.5 million inhabitants. As a result of constant migration, the city has grown rapidly in recent years.

The two most important symbols of the city are the Tigris River, which flows through the city, and the Diyarbakır Castle whose walls are among the greatest in the world. Other places to visit include the Ulu Cami (Great Mosque), the Behram Paşa Mosque,the Mosque of Prophet Omar, the Church of the Virgin Mary, and the House of Atatürk. One can also climb up the Diyarbakır Castle, whose walls are considered one of the longest standing walls in the world after the Great Wall of China. The house of the poet Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı now serves as a museum and is open to visitors.

Diyarbakır has a rich culinary culture and cuisine. Some of the dishes one can try are stuffed ribs, içli köfte (stuffed meatballs), sac tava (diced and fried lamb), liver kebab, and kadayıf dolması (stuffed shredded dough in syrup). The Dicle and Selahattin Eyyubi Universities offer tertiary education. 

A continental climate predominates Diyarbakır. Summers are hot and dry, but winters are not as cold as those in Eastern Anatolia. The airport is close to the city center. There are buses and taxis to cover the 6 km stretch from the airport to the center.

You can take a taxi if you are going to somewhere in the city, because the airport is close to the city center. If you need to travel to the distant centers, you can go to the bus terminal by taxi and then take bus or minibus to reach your destination.

Rent a car

You can also take advantage of car rental option to travel from the airport, which is 6 kilometers away from the city center. At the airport, there are the offices of Avis, Kançul Turizm, Hertz and Emir Oto car rental companies. You can book in advance to find the right car for your convenience.
