About Sarajevo

The capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Sarajevo is a Balkan city with an interesting mix of architecture, cuisine, and nature. This lovely city surrounded by green mountains and situated along the Miljacka River has been the symbol of tolerance for many years. The city, where Muslims, Catholics, Orthodox, and Jews live together in harmony, suffered tremendously during the civil war of the 1990s. Today one can witness the tragedy of the war at the Tunnel of Life Museum. Food, water and weapons were carried through this tunnel, dug under an old woman’s home in the days when all assistance to Bosnia-Herzegovina was stopped.

The most popular places of interest in Sarajevo are the Bascarsija, Ferhadija Street and the Latin Bridge, where the event that sparked World War I took place. Other places to visit include the Emperor’s Mosque, and other mosques of the Ottoman period, churches, brewery, and municipal government building.

Sarajevo winters are cold and snowy. The ideal time to visit is summer, spring and fall. A city of nearly 700,000 people, Sarajevo has an International Airport for air travel. The most convenient way to get to the city center is by taxi as public transport is not very developed.
