About Enschede

Located in the Netherlands, on the border with Germany, Enschede has a population of 156 thousand. The city is home to the FC Twente football team, which won the country’s league championship. Up until the last century Enschede was one of the Netherlands’ and West Germany’s most important textile centers and richest cities. Upon losing this distinction to countries in South-East Asia, it became one of the poorest municipalities in the Netherlands. The city has many remnants from when it was a rich textile city. The Rijksmuseum Twenthe for Art, which was founded by Baron Jan Bernard Van Heek, displays the history of the textiles industry of the city.

The museum also exhibits many paintings and hosts temporary exhibitions. Since the city has many schools and universities it also has a dense student population. A wonderful street market takes place on Saturday’s, attracting even more people to the city over the weekends. Enschede is home to a variety of sporting activities, the most important being the Enschede Marathon, which is Europe’s second oldest marathon. The marathon has been held every year since 1946 in April, except in 2000 when there was a disaster at the fireworks factory. While the city’s airport is located 2 km away it is not in use at the moment but you can access Enschede from airports in major cities like Amsterdam, Dortmund, and Cologne.
